The term massive multiplayer online role playing game, or MMORPG for short, refers to the type of role-playing game that is played online, with other people from around the world. These games are often played in either first person or third person.

MMORPGs should not be confused with PBBGs, or persistent browser-based games, which are played in a web browser; MMORPGs are played in their own game client, generally created using either Direct3D or OpenGL, and almost always Windows-based.
